Description

The Market-Focused Research (MFR) program is designed for faculty members, post-doctoral fellows and graduate students conducting healthcare-related research. The program emphasizes understanding the needs/wants of the market early in the research project so that the commercialization potential of the research outcome is improved. Participants will learn skills related to market/technology assessment, design thinking, intellectual property, communication, and strategies/considerations for technology commercialization. Expected outcomes include more successful grant applications, increased potential for partnerships with industry, increased awareness of Queen’s University research, an increased understanding of intellectual property and commercialization considerations. Participants will also become familiar with QPI’s commercialization services.

Description

SparQ Studios is a makerspace and design studio that provides a wide range of tools, machinery, knowledge, and expertise so that you can bring your idea into a physical form. With support from the Dunin-Deshpande Queen’s Innovation Centre (DDQIC), SparQ Studios was founded in 2013 by four students in DDQIC’s startup incubator who needed modern maker tools to build their product ideas. SparQ’s first home was a small study room in Beamish Munro Hall and it was one of Canada’s first on-campus makerspaces. Today, SparQ Studios is located in its own facility on the ground floor of Mitchell Hall. SparQ Studios is open to anyone in the community who wants to familiarize themselves with modern making equipment, learn new skills, and complete their own creative projects. It also caters to DDQIC start-ups who need to quickly prototype their ideas, a critical stage in the journey to building a successful product. Amenities include 3D printers, 3D scanner, laser cutter, soldering station, woodworking and metalworking stations, hand tools, free basic consumables, and more.

Description

Konnect is a 6-month program that provides a network, support system, and personal and professional development opportunities for self-identifying women who are working or starting businesses in Kingston. This program started when the Dunin-Deshpande Queen’s Innovation Centre and Alumni began noticing a particularly high attrition rate for women-led businesses and a number of female professionals seeking advice on common themes such as mentorship, negotiation, and general professional development. Konnect is a program that facilitates accountability, support, community, skill-building, and opportunities to amplify your success in building businesses or advancing professionally. The program of speaker-led workshops and community building meet-ups runs from October to March. Applications open in September.

QyourVenture is a program that helps students and community members turn their idea, technology, or inspiration into a venture. QyourVenture guides participants’ entrepreneurial journey in a tiered program that unlocks opportunities and resources as you and your team demonstrate your commitment and make progress in building your venture. Participation in QyourVenture is free and no equity is taken in your business in exchange for participation. You will attend free workshops, participate in bi-weekly updates pitches, join a community of like-minded founders, and have access free co-working space. As you make progress, you are eligible to unlock small amounts of seed funding, mentorship from a global network of entrepreneurs and industry experts, and access to the Disciplined Entrepreneurship toolbox developed at MIT.

Description

The goal of the Foundry program is to mobilize research at Queen’s University for societal impact through startups. The Foundry provides the opportunity for entrepreneurial teams to build a business from ideas and intellectual property developed by researchers at Queen’s University. The Foundry program is offered through the Queen’s Innovation Centre Summer Initiative (QICSI) program. In order to be eligible for the Foundry, you must first be accepted to QICSI. In the Foundry, entrepreneurial teams will review ideas and technology currently available at Queen’s University, assess their readiness for commercialization, and determine if they have a viable commercialization path with the option to form a company to bring the ideas or technology to market.

Description

The Queen’s Innovation Centre Summer Initiative (QICSI) is a startup incubation program where founders receive no-cost training, mentorship, and office space from May to August to launch their own venture. QICSI is for those who want to explore entrepreneurship or social innovation as a career path. Every year, we select around 50 ambitious candidates to be a part of the program. The program includes a 2 week bootcamp, weekly workshops, mentorship and networking opportunities, $4000 seed funding for each venture, a $7000 personal stipend for each participant, and the opportunity to pitch for more substantial financial support. There are two streams to apply; one for teams who are already workign on an idea, and one for individuals without an idea who would like to form a founder team and start a venture from scratch. All Kingston residents are welcome to apply. Post-secondary students from any discipline or level of study are eligible. QICSI is industry agnostic and supports ventures across the full spectrum of not-for-profit to for-profit, and social to traditional enterprise. Applications are open in October for the following summer.

The goal of the Hire Yourself program is to bring like-minded women together who have diverse international skills and want to learn how to open a business in Canada. This program will provide a personalized and fun, two-week orientation available to women new to Canada less than 10 years who are interested in starting a business in Kingston and the surrounding area.
